Extended car warranties are technically vehicle service contracts (VSCs): you pay $80-$170 a month and the administrator pays for covered mechanical failures after a deductible, subject to exclusions that fill several contract pages. No category we review draws more regulatory heat. The FTC's 2024 case against CarShield produced a $10 million settlement and refunds to 168,000 customers, a federal class action over claim denials is pending against Endurance, and 'your warranty is expiring' robocalls are a separate fraud industry that none of these companies controls but all benefit from. VSCs still have a legitimate use: high-mileage cars whose owners cannot absorb a $4,000 transmission bill.

Check the Manufacturer Option First

Before any third-party VSC, price the automaker-backed extended plan (Toyota Extra Care, FordProtect, Honda Care, and so on), ideally before the factory warranty lapses. Manufacturer plans are honored at any dealer, have no claims-administrator middleman, and rarely generate the denial disputes that define the aftermarket. They usually cost more and cap eligibility earlier; that premium buys certainty.

Third-party VSCs earn consideration when the manufacturer window has closed or the car's mileage is too high, which is precisely the market the companies below serve.

One question separates the five that follow more sharply than price does: who administers the contract, and who insures the administrator. Endurance administers its own and names its insurer. CARCHEX brokers contracts and does not name the administrator on its site. Complete Car Warranty and Select Auto Protect name neither. The seller is often not the company obliged to pay your claim, and if nobody will put that name in writing before you pay, there is nothing to check and no reason to proceed.
